Karlstad Treaty splits union of Norway and Sweden

On September 23, 1905, negotiations on the Karlstad Treaty ended with an agreement to split the union of Sweden and Norway. The accord was then approved by Norway’s parliament on October 9 and by Sweden’s on October 13.

On January 26, 1950, India ratified its constitution, formally making the new country a republic. On the same day, Rajendra Prasad was inaugurated as the republic's first president. The anniversary is celebrated today as Republic Day in India.
