Potsdam Conference Opens

On July 17, 1945, a conference attended by US President Harry Truman, UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and USSR leader Joseph Stalin opened in Postdam, Germany. Along with the Yalta Conference a few months prior, Potsdam created the post-World War II world order.

First black woman judge appointed in US

On July 22, 1939, New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia appointed Jane Matilda Bolin a judge of the city's Domestic Relations Court, making her the first African-American woman appointed to judicial office in the United States.
