UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned on Monday that escalating conflicts and deepening societal divisions are fueling “turbulence and unpredictability” across the globe. Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk called for renewed commitments to international law and human rights, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action in multiplying crises.

Türk outlined how ongoing conflicts, including those in Ukraine, the Middle East and parts of Africa, are exacerbating human suffering and destabilizing global security. He pointed to the widening disregard for international humanitarian law, citing indiscriminate attacks on civilians, forced displacements, and rising authoritarianism as key threats to global stability.

The High Commissioner also underscored the increasing polarization within societies fueled by economic disparities, disinformation, and political extremism, stating that “divisions within states are being inflamed by rhetoric that dehumanizes certain groups and erodes social cohesion.” He warned that growing intolerance and eroding democratic principles contribute to widespread disillusionment and mistrust in institutions.

Türk criticized governments prioritizing short-term political gains over long-term human rights and justice commitments. He argued that selective adherence to international law undermines global governance and weakens the credibility of international institutions. The High Commissioner urged nations to uphold their legal obligations, reaffirming that “human rights must not be optional or subject to political convenience.”

Highlighting the role of technology and artificial intelligence in shaping public discourse, Türk cautioned against weaponizing digital platforms to spread misinformation and suppress dissent. He called for stronger regulations to ensure technological advancements serve humanity rather than deepen existing divisions.

Türk concluded by reiterating the importance of multilateralism in addressing these challenges. According to the High Commissioner, the solutions to collective crises lie in global solidarity, adherence to human rights norms, and a commitment to inclusive dialogue. He urged the international community to resist the forces of division and prioritize human dignity in policy-making.
