The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chief, Lee Zeldin, on Wednesday announced 31 deregulatory actions to “Power the Great American Comeback.” In doing so, Zeldin noted the agency’s commitment to “fulfilling President Trump’s promise to … restore the rule of law, and give power back to states to make their own decisions.”
Stating that these “historic actions” will significantly reduce regulatory costs and “hidden taxes” for US families, Zeldin said:
Today is the greatest day of deregulation our nation has seen. We are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion to drive down cost of living for American families, unleash American energy, bring auto jobs back to the U.S. and more. …
Alongside President Trump, we are living up to our promises to unleash American energy, lower costs for Americans, revitalize the American auto industry, and work hand-in-hand with our state partners to advance our shared mission.
Among other things, these actions include reconsideration of regulations on power plants, reconsideration of regulations “throttling the oil and gas industry,” reconsideration of “burdensome” greenhouse gas reporting program, reconsideration of wastewater regulations for coal power plants, reconsideration of the 2009 endangerment finding, overhaul of the Obama, Biden-Harris climate measurements program regarding the “social cost of carbon,” termination of former president Joe Biden’s Environmental Justice and DEI arms of the agency, and many more.
Zeldin also pledged advancement of “cooperative federalism”, committing to shift power back to the states and also reconsider the “Good Neighbor Plan,” which he alleges the Biden-Harris administration abused to eliminate “nearly all State Implementation Plans.”
Alleging that the Biden and Obama era regulations “have suffocated nearly every single sector of the American economy,” Zeldin claims that these actions will bring about “incredible progress” in addition to bringing back American auto jobs.
