Trump plans to continue restricting the Associated Press access to presidential events

President Trump said in a news conference Tuesday that he plans to continue restricting the Associated Press’s (AP) access to presidential events until the news outlet updates its style guide to reflect recent changes by the Trump administration.

Trump called phrases the outlet continues to use “obsolete”. Specifically, the president criticized AP’s continued use of the “Gulf of Mexico,” refusing to call it the “Gulf of America.” In the news conference, Trump said:

[S]ome phrases are okay but many aren’t. But the Associated Press just refuses to go with what the law is and what is taking place. It’s called the Gulf of America now. It’s not called the Gulf of Mexico any longer… [W]e’re going to keep them out until such a time as they agree it’s the Gulf of America. We’re very proud of this country and we wanted it to be the Gulf of America.

AP has framed this as a free speech issue, arguing the denial of access based on their reporting violates the First Amendment. AP spokesperson Lauren Easton said, “This is about the government telling the public and press what words to use and retaliating if they do not follow government orders. The White House has restricted AP’s coverage of presidential events because of how we refer to a location.” However, Trump’s team responded, saying that access to its events is a “privilege extended by invitation”. Some have argued, Trump said this in retaliation after the US president addressed the matter by saying:

Now, this Associated Press as you know has been very very wrong on the election, on Trump, and on the treatment of Trump and other things having to do with Trump and Republicans … [T]hey’re doing us no favors and I guess I’m not doing them any favors. That’s the way life works.

There has been no further clarification on this issue. AP is still permitted on White House grounds, but until further notice will no longer be allowed to cover events where space is limited.
