Protesters breach Seoul courthouse after impeached South Korea President Yoon arrested

Supporters of impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol breached Seoul’s Western District Court early Sunday after the court authorized a warrant for Yoon’s formal arrest and the president was taken into custody, according to national media outlet Yonhap News. Images and video unverified by JURIST purport to show protesters entering the courthouse through a broken window and a breached entrance. Video also appears to show protesters spraying fire extinguishers at police as well as breaking windows and throwing objects inside the courthouse. Local media reports that additional riot police were deployed to quell the fracas. 40 protesters were arrested during demonstrations before the breach, according to Yonhap.

Yoon appeared in court on Saturday for a hearing on whether he should be formally arrested for declaring martial law in December. Judge Cha Eun-kyung decided to issue the warrant over concerns that Yoon would destroy evidence related to the case. The impeached president was temporarily detained on Wednesday after prosecutors attempted a second time to apprehend the leader. The first attempt was blocked by the Presidential Security Service.

The impeached president faces insurrection and abuse of power charges in relation to his surprise martial law declaration, which was cancelled by South Korea’s National Assembly mere hours after it was enacted. Insurrection charges may carry the death penalty in South Korea.

Yonhap reported that Yoon’s arrest marks the first time a sitting South Korean president has been arrested. Yoon will reportedly be placed in pretrial detention, be photographed, and be made to wear a jail uniform. However, media reports that the president will be placed in solitary confinement due to his status.
