FBI confirms ‘lone wolf’ terrorist responsible for New Orleans attack

The FBI announced at a press conference on Thursday that the suspect behind the deadly truck attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans is believed to be a “lone-wolf” terrorist, acting alone without any known accomplices.

FBI deputy assistant director Christopher Raia from the Counterterrorism Division provided updates on the devastating truck attack on Bourbon Street that claimed 14 lives and injured 35 others on New Year’s Day. Joined by Assistant Special Agent in Charge Alethea Duncan of the New Orleans FBI office, Raia confirmed the incident as a lone-wolf terrorist attack that was carried out by Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a US citizen and military veteran from Texas. Raia stated: “There is just nothing to indicate — through call records, through anything on those devices, through interviews, through anything in our systems — that he was aided in this attack by anyone.”

Jabbar rented the vehicle in Houston, Texas, days before the attack and posted videos online expressing support for ISIS while driving to New Orleans. On New Year’s morning, Jabbar rammed through barricades on Bourbon Street, using his truck to target pedestrians. He later opened fire before being subdued. Investigators have recovered three of Jabbar’s phones and an ISIS flag from the truck.

Raia added: “What happened here in New Orleans was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act. It was premeditated and evil.” He extended condolences to the victims and assured the community that the FBI was dedicating all available resources to uncover every detail of the attack.

Raia also provided updates about the two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that were safely neutralized at key intersections on Bourbon Street, with surveillance footage showing Jabbar placing them. Two other suspicious items were determined not to be IEDs.

The FBI also noted ongoing investigations across the country, including the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck at the entrance of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. Raia said, however, that “no definitive link” between the two incidents has been established. Teams of FBI agents, bomb technicians, and evidence specialists are actively working on leads, and the FBI is urging anyone with information about Jabbar or who was in the French Quarter during the incident to come forward with any information.
