UN committee concerned over Israel ‘disregard’ for international legal obligations

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) expressed concern Friday over Israel’s disregard for its international legal obligations. CERD called for urgent measures to address the violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

CERD released the statement under its Early Warning and Urgent Action Procedures, which aim to prevent existing conflicts from escalating. The procedures also also identify and respond to problems requiring immediate intervention, particularly conflicts that have occurred previously.

CERD reported its disapproval of Israel’s “flagrant disregard” of the International Court of Justice advisory opinion issued earlier this year, as well as the numerous recommendations reported by other UN special committees.

CERD also expressed its disdain for the brutal attacks on civilians, mainly in Gaza. More than 44,500 Palestinians have been killed and more than 105,000 injured over the past 14 months. Additionally, many journalists and humanitarian aid workers have been killed or injured during the conflict.

The report emphasized Israel’s responsibility to prevent war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Israel is a party to several international human rights treaties, namely the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The committee reiterated that Israel has a duty under these treaties to combat violence and discrimination.

CERD urged an immediate and sustained ceasefire and called on Israel to uphold its obligations under international law. Additionally, the report emphasized the need for other countries to ensure that war crimes and other crimes against humanity are put to an end.
