The small town of McColl, South Carolina has been left without a police department following the resignation of its chief of police Bob Hale on Friday. Hale cited a “hostile work environment perpetuated by a specific Councilman” as his reason for resignation.
Hale submitted his resignation on October 31st 2024 to the town council, with his last day as part of the police department being November 22nd, 2024. In his initial resignation letter to the McColl town council, Hale referred to being subject to a “multitude of problems and issues” throughout his tenure in the city.
On his personal Facebook, Hale wrote a post explaining his reasons for leaving his post and announcing the departure of all four of his fellow officers in the department. Hale alleged that a particular Councilman created a toxic work environment for himself and his department, and made it impossible to fulfil his duties without compromising his principles and values. Moreover, Hale stated that he attempted to resolve these issues through the proper channels, but the harassment persisted. Hale’s fellow investigator claimed that they left their position in the department because of the continuing budget cuts, alleging that their police vehicle ceased working and no aid was provided.
The Mayor of McColl, George Garner, stated in an interview with WMBF news that he “hated to see them go” but that the town would continue. He added that the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office would cover the town as they searched for a new police chief.
Though Hale has left his position, he apologized for any difficulties this may cause for the town, and that the behind-the-scenes troubles be resolved.
