Mexico mayor assassinated in state plagued by violence

Alejandro Arcos, the mayor of the Mexican city of Chilpancingo, has been assassinated, Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado confirmed Sunday. Arcos was beheaded and left in a truck on a city street. While the death was confirmed on Sunday, the actual murder is believed to have occurred the day before. No arrests have been made so far.

Arcos assumed office only six days prior to his death, with violence occurring even before his administration began. On September 27, the presumed next municipal secretary of public security, Ulises Hernandez Martinez, was murdered while driving, along with his assistant. The general secretary of the City Council, Francisco Gonzalo Tapia Gutiérrez, was shot dead October 3, only four days after taking up his position.

Chilpancingo is the capital city of Guerrero, one of Mexico’s poorest states, which recorded 1,890 murders last year alone. In June, the state also witnessed the murder of Acacio Flores, the mayor of Malinaltepec. There have also been a large numbers of murders recorded in Acapulco, a major resort city. The majority of the violence, including the large number of political murders, in the state has been attributed to violence by drug cartels and traffickers engaged in turf wars as well as in conflict against government forces.

Confirmation of Arcos’ death came only after unverified photos of his body began circulating on WhatsApp. Alejandro Moreno, the president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), expressed his condolences over the recent string of deaths, saying that “they were young and honest officials who sought progress for their community… Given the situation of ungovernability in Guerrero, we will be asking the @FGRMexic0 [the Attorney General’s Office] to take on the investigations of both murders.”
