Colombia strengthens security at Supreme Court following threat

In response to a potential threat, the Colombian government swiftly implemented a series of stringent security protocols Friday aimed at safeguarding the nation’s highest judicial body. According to a statement from the presidency, these measures include the installation of advanced surveillance systems, the deployment of anti-explosive teams, continuous monitoring through drones, and the engagement of specialized security units. “Measures have been implemented to reinforce security and surveillance of the Justice Palace, both with the exit and entry of passengers, registration and exit of vehicles.” the presidency declared.

These actions underscore the government’s commitment to preventing any attack on the judicial system. The gravity of the situation became apparent when the president of the Supreme Court, Magistrate Gerson Chaverra, revealed during a press briefing that police had discovered crucial evidence during a raid. Among the items seized were a detailed model of the Palace of Justice, along with ammunition and explosives. The discovery has led to heightened vigilance across all judicial institutions in Colombia.

Further details emerged as the Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement elaborating on the findings. The statement confirmed that, in a coordinated effort with the National Police, the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Criminal Organizations conducted raids on August 13 at two locations in the southern part of Bogotá. The raids uncovered 68 rounds of ammunition and two suppliers for a 5.56 mm rifle, 16 packages of explosive powder, a military-grade bulletproof vest, and the aforementioned model resembling the Palace of Justice.

Following the discovery of this cache of military materials, the Attorney General of the Nation, Luz Adriana Camargo Garzón, took immediate steps to reinforce security at the Supreme Court, coordinating with the National Police and the President of the Supreme Court. The prosecutor’s Office emphasized that these findings are under thorough investigation to determine the origin and identity of the criminal actors potentially behind this alleged plot to attack Colombia’s institutions and high-profile figures.
