Argentina police arrests 2 France rugby players for alleged sexual assault

Martín Ahumada, spokesman for the provincial Judiciary of Mendoza, said on Tuesday that two French rugby players, Oscar Jegou and Hugo Aradou, were arrested by the Argentine federal police for alleged sexual assault on Monday.

The alleged attack occurred in Mendoza, Argentina and both players were arrested upon the request of local prosecutors. According to police sources, the players are accused of sexual assault by a woman they met at a bar on Saturday. The woman claimed that she was raped by the players in a hotel they took her to after she felt dizzy at the bar.

According to the woman’s lawyer Natacha Romano, the alleged rape occurred in a hotel room, where the woman was locked for four hours. Romano also said that there are visible injuries on the woman’s face, ribs and head. On the other hand, the players’ lawyer Rafael Cuneo Libarona said the players claimed that they engaged in consensual sex with the woman, and no violence was present. Mendoza prosecutor Daniela Chaler said that the woman’s injuries align with her accounts of the event but are not necessarily the result of sexual assault. Martín Ahumada said the players would be charged if investigations align with the victim’s claim.

While French Rugby Federation (FFR) President Florian Grill said that he does not have all the details of the sexual assault allegations, Grill said that the allegations are extremely serious if the facts are proven to be true. French Minister of Youth, Sports and Olympic and Paralympic Games Amélie Oudéa-Castéra echoed Grill’s concerns on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the allegations amount to atrocities if they are established as facts.
