Mexico Neuvo León governor promises to compensate election stage collapse victims

Governor Samuel Garcia of the northern Mexico State Nuevo León took to X (formerly Twitter) to express condolences to the victims and their families in an election stage tragedy on Friday. During a rally for presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Mayney, high winds caused the collapse of the stage that killed nine, including a child, and injured over a hundred others.

Maynez is the candidate of Movimiento Ciudadano, a center-left party in Mexico. Video of the incident shows Maynez waving to the crowd before noticing the screen falling toward him. Then, he ran off the stage with others. Screams and flashing lights can be heard. After reporting that he was safe, Maynez returned to the site to assist with the emergency response. He and other candidates, such as front-running Claudia Sheinbaum, have cancelled upcoming campaign events in respect for the victims.

Thousands across Mexico have taken to social media to express solidarity with the victims. Governor Garcia said that the government of Nuevo León has covered all of the funeral expenses for those who died in the tragedy and will pay assistance to any children who have lost a parent. According to Garcia, the state health ministry has treated and released 94 patients, but 27 remain hospitalized. Maynez visited the injured patients in the hospital, calling it “one of the most painful experiences of my life”. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also commented on the tragedy on his social media, expressing his regret for the incident.
