Indonesia election watchdog summons president’s son and VP candidate Gibran for alleged campaign violation

Indonesia’s election watchdog Tuesday summoned Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of President Joko Widodo and the running mate of the leading presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, for questioning on an alleged campaign violation.

The General Election Supervisory Board (BAWASLU) reportedly summoned vice-presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, alleging campaign violations related to milk distribution during Jakarta’s car-free day.  The coordinator of BAWASLU’s Breach Handling and Data Information Division, Jakpus Dimas Trianto Putro, alleged that Gibran failed to appear before BAWASLU for clarification despite two invitation attempts. The summons, sent to Gibran’s residence and the campaign office, scheduled an examination for Wednesday. BAWASLU plans to proceed with the investigation, even though Gibran has repeatedly not appeared for questioning after the invitation. Dimas asserted,

We have sent the letter to the office in Slipi, and there is already an acknowledgement receipt. The receipt serves as proof that the letter has been received. So, if Mr. Gibran claims not to have received it, we wouldn’t know. What we know for sure is that the letter has been sent.

Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who was reportedly disinterested in politics and focused on entrepreneurial endeavors, became the mayor of Surakarta in Central Java in 2021, following in his father’s footsteps. Despite his earlier reluctance, Gibran is now running for vice president in the 2024 general election alongside presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra Party.

The 2024 General Election in Indonesia is scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, 2024. This election encompasses the selection of the President and Vice President, Members of the House of Representatives, Members of the Regional Representative Council (DPD), and local legislators. In total, 18 national and six local political parties in the province of Aceh are participating in the 2024 election.
