Russia’s TASS news agency reported Thursday that the Russian Interior Ministry has issued an arrest warrant for the International Criminal Court judge who issued the arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, Justice Tomoko Akane.
In the statement, TASS News agency said, “The “[J]udge Tomoko Akane, […] has been formally designated as wanted on criminal charges, according to the wanted list maintained by the Russian Interior Ministry.” However, no specific charges have been indicated.
This comes as The Russian Investigative Committee (RIC) announced on May 19th it had added International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan to its wanted list. Khan alongside Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala was later charged in absentia. These announcements came in response to the International Criminal Court issuing warrants for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the forced deportation of Ukrainian children as well as the Russian Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.
Since the outset of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 22, 2022, Ukraine’s government estimates that Russia has injured 16,384 civilians, with 9,287 killed, 99,910 war crimes registered, 497 children killed and 120,000 civilian buildings destroyed. On the official war website, it states “Actual numbers might be considerably higher, as information from many locations with intense hostilities is not yet available or confirmed.”
