Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Poland’s leadership of seeking to capture Ukranian land and potentially invade Belarus in a televised address on Friday. Putin said that NATO would form a task force that would enter the Ukraine War and then that Poland would take historically Polish lands in Western Ukraine and perhaps Belarus as well.
Putin claimed that their reason for wanting to do this was to claim the “historical lands” of Poland, which happen to be located in Belarus and Ukraine. Despite having no evidence, Putin further clarified that this would lead to Poland gaining large amounts of land both from Belarus and Ukraine after they had “annexed” the states.
The Russian president went on to clarify that any form of aggression towards Belarus will be considered aggression against Russia. The two countries have been in a union called the “Union State” since 2000. Putin finished his statement by reminding Poland that during World War II, it was Russia who liberated them, not the West.
Putin’s speech follows Poland raising alarm about a major increase in troop movements and training near its border with Belarus. Most of these war games were carried out by the Wagner Group and the Belarusian military as Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin is reportedly in exile in Belarus.
