Michael Cohen, former attorney of former President Donald Trump, settled his lawsuit against the Trump organization Friday. The suit alleged that Cohen was owed over $1.9 million in legal fees that the Trump Organization refused to pay after Cohen was fired as Trump’s attorney.
The hearing was not recorded; however, Kara Scannell with CNN, who was present at the hearing, reported that Cohen’s attorney, Hunter Winstead stated, “We’ll take this off your docket. I know you’ll be heartbroken,” to which Judge Joel Cohen responded, “I’ll be neither heartbroken or heart warmed. Our job is to resolve disputes – that’s good enough for me.” The settlement terms are confidential. However, both parties released statements to the media confirming the suit “has been resolved in a manner satisfactory to all parties.”
The suit is only one of many ongoing legal disputes involving Trump and Cohen. In April, Trump filed a $500 million lawsuit against Cohen alleging “reputational harm” from Cohen’s statements and tell-all book Disloyal. Cohen is also expected to testify against Trump in his upcoming criminal trial in New York over hush payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. Cohen previously served prison time for his role in the hush money scheme and has been disbarred and banned from practicing law.
Trump is facing his own legal battles as he begins his 2024 run for President. He is facing criminal charges in Florida over his retention of allegedly classified documents, a criminal trial in New York over hush money payments to Daniels, a case in Georgia over alleged attempts to overturn election results, and he recently disclosed he received a letter that he is under investigation for his involvement in the January 6th insurrection and statements made after he lost the 2020 election.
