South Carolina man Trevor Mullinax filed a complaint against York County, South Carolina, and the York County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday claiming he was shot at “around 50 times” during a wellness check in 2021.
The complaint states relatives called in a wellness check on Mullinax as he contemplated suicide. Mullinax had a shotgun in the car with him. Sheriff’s deputies arrived at Mullinax’s property, jumped from their vehicles and pointed their firearms at Mullinax and his mother. The deputies then began shooting “immediately and without warning.”
Mullinax was hit by at least nine bullets and was hit once in the head. The deputies charged Mullinax with pointing and presenting a firearm at the deputies. The entire ordeal was captured by a dash cam.
The complaint alleged the sheriff’s department engaged in gross negligence, false imprisonment, barratry, abuse of process, battery, and defamation. A press release from the York County Sheriff’s Office states that three of the four deputies are “still serving the community” and that after an “independent investigation” all involved deputies were “cleared of any wrongdoing.”
