According to documents obtained by the Associated Press, Judge Beryl Howell ruled Friday that federal prosecutors investigating Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents can compel his lawyer to answer more questions before a grand jury.
The ruling has been provided in a sealed order, which has not been made available to the public. However, the Associated Press has obtained a description of the order by a person familiar with its contents. This description was provided on the basis of anonymity, given that there has been no authorization by the court to discuss the order.
The purpose of the order is to require Trump’s lawyer, Evan Corcoran, to answer additional questions regarding the investigation into classified documents discovered at Mar-a-Lago. This testimony will also relate to allegations of potential efforts to obstruct the investigation. However, the precise scope of the order, which is expected to be appealed, was not immediately clear.
This news came just hours before Trump announced online that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday, urging his supporters to engage in mass protests. Speaking on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump issued a statement on the “Manhattan DA’s Witch-Hunt.” In the statement, Trump discussed what he described as an “unlawful Mar-a-Lago raid” saying that “Democrats have investigated and attacked President Trump since before he was elected—and they’ve failed every time.”
Should prosecutors pursue an indictment of Trump, it would be the first criminal case ever brought against a former US president.
