A Peruvian judge Sunday ordered 30 months of pre-trial detention for President Pedro Castillo’s sister-in-law, Yenifer Paredes. The court found that the preventive detention was a well-founded request by prosecutors investigating corruption allegations.
Peru’s Prosecution Office launched their investigation into Castillo’s activities in May, looking into allegations of criminal organization, aggravated influence peddling, and aggravated collusion.
The prosecutor has alleged that Paredes was part of a group that engaged in influence peddling to assign public contracts to allies of Castillo in their home region of Cajamarca, in the Peruvian Andes. Paredes has not been charged with any crime but is required to remain in detention while the prosecutor carries out the investigation.
The prosecutor will seek to appeal the decision as they had originally requested 36 months of pre-trial detention. Paredes’ lawyers also intend to appeal the decision.
