The man who shot US President Ronald Reagan in 1981 Wednesday received unconditional release in compliance with US District Court Judge Paul Friedman’s order earlier in June.
In response to his unconditional release, John Hinckley wrote on social media “After 41 years 2 months and 15 days, FREEDOM AT LAST!!!”
Judge Friedman earlier in June said Hinckley was on the path towards full release from court supervision on June 15, 2022. Judge Friedman approved a deal from September 2021 between the US Department of Justice and Hinckley for “unconditional release” which does not restrict “his movements or internet activity.” Judge Friedman stated that had Hinckley not targeted President Reagan then the restrictions would have ceased “a long, long, long time ago[.]”
In response to Hinckley’s approved unconditional release, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute released the following statement on September 27, 2021:
The Reagan Foundation and Institute is saddened to hear of the decision to unconditionally release John Hinckley, Jr., the man responsible for the attempted assassination of President Reagan, a shooting that gravely wounded three other brave men. Contrary to the judge’s decision, we believe John Hinckley is still a threat to others and we strongly oppose his release. Our hope is that the Justice Department will file a motion with the court leading to a reversal of this decision.
