The US House of Representatives Wednesday passed a bill restricting access to guns. The Protecting Our Children Act includes raising the minimum age for semi-automatic rifles, banning high-capacity magazines, and adding criminal offenses for those who buy guns through proxy after failing background checks. The bill now heads to the US Senate where it may be subject to a filibuster, blocking the legislation.
The bill comes on the heels of multiple incidences of gun violence in the US—most recently, the Buffalo supermarket shooting on May 14 and the Robb Elementary Shooting on May 24. The Buffalo shooting took place in a predominantly Black neighborhood. Authorities said the 18-year-old suspect was motivated by hate as evidenced by describing himself as a White Supremacist.
The Robb Elementary shooting took the lives of 19 children and two adults. The 18-year-old gunman used an AK-15 semi-automatic rifle and 164 rounds of ammunition. However, in contrast to the Buffalo shooting, the gunman’s motives were unclear.
President Joe Biden has been an advocate for harsher gun control measures and implored Congress to Act.
