New York Governor Kathy Hochul Monday signed six bills aimed at protecting the rights of those who provide and seek abortions. The legislative package includes the Reproductive Health Act (RHA) and the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act (CCCA).
Hochul commented:
Reproductive rights are human rights, and today we are signing landmark legislation to further protect them and all who wish to access them in New York State. The women of New York will never be subjected to government mandated pregnancies. Not here. Not now. Not ever.
The Supreme Court has still not issued an official opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, but a leaked draft would overturn Roe v. Wade. In 2019, New York passed a law that would protect abortion rights if Roe is overturned. However, 26 states already have laws to ban abortion should the Supreme Court overturn Roe.
Oklahoma recently passed a law banning abortions at the stage of “fertilization.” Idaho has a similar law pending in court.
