A US federal judge Friday denied a request for bail by Enrique Tarrio, the former top leader of the Proud Boys. Tarrio is awaiting trial on criminal charges from the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

US District Court for the District of Columbia Judge Timothy Kelly, in the order issued late Friday, found by “‘clear and convincing evidence’ that because of the prospective danger to the community that Tarrio presents, that ‘no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of any other person and the community.'”

Tarrio has been in custody since March 8 after being indicted on several charges relating to the events of January 6. However, he claims to have stepped down from his role as chairman of the group designated as a terrorist entity by Canada.

While Tarrio was not physically in Washington, DC when the attack on the Capitol happened, there is evidence demonstrating his involvement in the storming of the Capitol.

Tarrio was arrested two days prior to the January 6 attack for burning a Black Lives Matter banner in December 2020 at a historically Black church.

Besides Tarrio, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl, Charles Donohoe and Dominic Pezzola, other individuals associated with the Proud Boys, are awaiting trial for their role in the Capitol attack.
