The Supreme Court of India directed  Thursday the Central Government to formulate a plan for the induction of women into the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) by allowing them to appear for the upcoming examination on December 18, 2021, for the term beginning from June 2022.

The court has even directed the Central Government that a necessarily modified advertisement be issued within two days without changing the examination schedule. The court did not want to delay the induction process for another year and stated that the Central Government has almost six months to make adequate preparations.

Apart from the present issue, the court has also been adjudicating upon the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against the exclusion of female candidates from RMIC and other Colleges run under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence like Indian Military College, Sainik School, National Yacht training school.

An application on a similar issue is filed by the Centre for Reforms, Development, and Justice seeking directions to amend its policy for admission to RIMC Dehradun. They are seeking to allow female students to apply and take admission in courses offered for male students at par without any gender inequality. It challenged the notification issued by RIMC on 28th July 2021 inviting applications for admission for eligible students male candidates without considering to include females.

The court has also directed that for the RMIC, the induction process will begin with the academic session 2022-2023.
