Long-time critic of the Russian government Alexei Navalny on Saturday lost the appeal of his conviction on parole violations.
Navalny was jailed for the violations earlier this month after he was found guilty of failing to report from August 2020 to January 2021. During that time period, Navalny was in Germany recovering from an attempt on his life with a chemical nerve agent. He argued that he had informed authorities of his location in Germany, and he could not report only because he was convalescing due to the poisoning.
The prosecution argued that Navalny was recovered enough by the end of September last year to be moving around freely inside Germany and that he could have complied with his parole requirements. In the end, the judge sided with the prosecution but shortened Navalny’s original jail term of three-and-a-half years by six weeks.
After a short recess, Navalny was back before the court in a separate case where he is accused of slandering a World War II veteran. The veteran, Ignat Aryomenko, had taken part in videos supporting constitutional reforms that allow Vladimir Putin to run for two additional terms after his current term ends in 2024. Navalny is accused of defaming those in the videos by calling them, traitors and lackeys.
Navalny claimed the case is an attempt to distract the people from the accusations he has made about corruption in the Kremlin. He told the prosecutor and the judge, “You will burn in hell.” Earlier today the judge found him guilty and ordered him to pay a fine.
