More than 750 legal and constitutional scholars and professors have signed on to a letter urging the immediate removal of President Donald Trump from office in the wake of the attack on the U.S. Capitol Building.
The letter, hosted on the American Constitution Society’s (ACS) website, begins by calling Trump “a grave risk to our democracy.” It notes how the president has undermined confidence in the U.S. electoral process through his continued lies about the election results, how he has called upon state officials to undermine those results, and how “a lawless, insurrectionist mob stormed the United States Capitol pursuant to his incitement and support.”
The scholars state that the president has violated his oath of office, and they urge both Congress and the Cabinet to use whatever means necessary, either through impeachment or by invoking the 25th Amendment, to remove Trump from office, “before further violence takes place or even greater damage is inflicted on our democracy.” Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has drafted articles of impeachment which could be up for a vote as soon as Monday.
