The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) adopted a resolution Tuesday extending the investigation into human rights abuses in Venezuela. The resolution expresses concern about the ongoing political, economic, social and humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the “erosion of the rule of law” and the lack of an independent judicial system, which has created and contributed to the patterns of human rights violations.

The UNHRC is also pushing for Venezuelan authorities to increase transparency and provide information about the COVID-19 situation in the country, urging the authorities to follow international human rights recommendations.

The resolution includes a recommitment to the mandate of the independent international fact-finding mission in Venezuela, extending the mission for another two years. The mission has found evidence of crimes against humanity being committed in Venezuela. These crimes include extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture, and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment, including those involving sexual and gender-based violence, which have all been committed since 2014.
