MGM Resorts reach settlement with Las Vegas shooting victims

Clark County District Court Judge Linda Bell on Wednesday approved an $800 million settlement from MGM Resorts to the victims of the 2017 Mandalay Bay shooting in Las Vegas.

On October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock opened fire on a street concert from a room at the Mandalay Bay Resort. Fifty-eight people were killed, and more than 850 were injured. Bell noted, “near-unanimous participation in the settlement among potential claimants.” MGM Resorts will pay $49 million of the settlement, while insurance companies will cover the remaining $751 million.

MGM Resorts’ initial complaint asserted that they were not liable for the incident under the SAFETY Act, which provides incentives for the implementation of anti-terrorism technologies. As part of the settlement agreement, MGM Resorts acknowledges no liability. The company stated, “We are grateful that the decision brings families, victims and the community closer to closure.”

Robert Eglet, the attorney who organized the settlement, stated, “There’ve been no objections and we expect no appeals.” The $800 million settlement will be paid out to the 4,400 relatives and victims of the shooting.
