Hong Kong police wearing riot gear overwhelmed and arrested at least 86 people on Thursday during planned protests against Beijing during China’s National Day holiday.
According to a Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) press release, protesters gathered in Causeway Bay and other areas of Hong Kong chanting slogans like “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” and blocking roads despite police warnings.
The protests come one year after larger and more violent protests disrupted the city on China’s National Day and in response to mounting restrictions imposed by Beijing. Among those arrested include four district Councillors who are accused of participating in and inciting the demonstrations.
Police report that these protests may be in violation of the city’s recently passed national security law and that such protests will be met with “resolute enforcement actions.” The Hong Kong national security law makes crimes such as sedition punishable by life imprisonment.
