Senators heard closing arguments from House managers and lawyers for the White House on Monday, two days ahead of the scheduled vote in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
Both sides were given two hours to make their final arguments on their opposing conclusions regarding Trump’s interactions with Ukraine ahead of the 2020 general election.
California Representative Adam Schiff, who has led the Democrat’s impeachment managers throughout the hearings, used his final comments to sway Republicans to use their vote no on party lines but for what his side has called the “truth” regarding the President’s conduct in office. “Truth matters to you. Right matters to you. You are decent. He is not who you are.”
White House defense attorneys reiterated that the entire impeachment process had been one that was politically motivated from the beginning of Trump’s presidency, a point that the president tweeted himself while the closing remarks were taking place.
While the impeachment trial is adjourned until the scheduled vote on Wednesday at 4 PM ET in which it is expected a majority will vote to acquit, Trump himself will get a sort of “final argument” when he delivers the annual State of the Union address Tuesday evening.
