The UN human rights commission expressed concern Tuesday over the killings of human rights activists in Colombia in 2019.
The commission stated that they were “deeply troubled by the staggering number of human rights defenders killed in Colombia during 2019.” The commission noted that there have been between 107 and 120 killings of human rights activists in Colombia in 2019.
In its press release, the commission implored the “Colombian Government to make a strenuous effort to prevent attacks on people defending fundamental rights, to investigate each and every case and to prosecute those responsible for these violations, including instigating or aiding and abetting violations.” The commission did acknowledge some of the Colombian Government’s efforts to address the problem, but stated that “much more needs to be done.”
