Trump legal team calls on Senate to reject impeachment articles

US President Donald Trump’s impeachment legal team submitted a 171-page trial memorandum Monday urging his immediate acquittal, arguing that the House articles of impeachment do not identify any impeachable offense.

White House Counsel contends that the president did not engage in any unconstitutional or illegal activity, calling the Articles of Impeachment “the product of an unprecedented and unconstitutional process that denied the President every basic right guaranteed by the Due Process Clause and fundamental principles of fairness.”

“The Articles of Impeachment now before the Senate are an affront to the Constitution and to our democratic institutions. The Articles themselves—and the rigged process that brought them here—are a brazenly political act by House Democrats that must be rejected,” the executive summary states.

Last week the House approved seven impeachment managers to prosecute Trump, sending the proceedings to the Senate.

The trial is set to begin Tuesday.
