The EU called Thursday for the adoption of targeted sanctions and freezing f assets of Chinese officials for the “severe repression” of the human rights of the Uighur people in Xinjiang. The resolution was adopted by a show of hands.
The resolution states that Uighurs and other ethnic Muslim minorities are subject to arbitrary detention, torture and extensive digital surveillance. Thus far, the tools used by the EU have not led to tangible progress in China’s human rights record, and dialogue with the Chinese authorities is vital.
The resolution further says a recent leak of classified documents seem to confirm that more than 1 million Muslims, mostly Uighurs, are detained in “re-education camps” in northwestern Xinjiang. MEPs strongly condemned these camps and call on the Chinese government to release all detainees, who are there without any charges or convictions.
MEPs also called on the Chinese government to give journalists and international observers access to Xinjiang so they may assess the situation on the ground. In addition, they expressed concern over the harassment of Uighurs abroad to remain silent, sometimes by detaining family members.
