California governor signs anti-fraudulent vaccine exemption bill

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into legislation California bill SB276 Monday, which brings stronger consequences to doctors who write fraudulent medical vaccine exemptions for school-aged children.

The legislation includes provisions for the creation of a database of physicians with pending accusations and charges, from which California’s Department of Public Health shall not approve a vaccination exemption unless and until the accusation is resolved in the physician’s favor.

Newsom also signed a companion bill, which includes a phase-out period so current exemptions remain valid. Enforcement against doctors will begin next year.
