Google has reached an $11 million settlement in an age discrimination lawsuit, according to a Friday court filing.
Google maintains that it has not participated in age discrimination, citing its diversity report. However, Google did not include diversity statistics for age in its report, or even reference age statistics.
The $11-million dollar settlement will be divided among the 227 job seekers who filed the suit. Google agreed to settle the case in December, but the final settlement agreement was presented to a federal judge on Friday.
The lawsuit alleged that Google hired younger workers based on their ability to “fit” with the culture at Google. The lawsuit was originally filed by lead plaintiff Robert Heath, but his claim was settled in December. The class action lawsuit continued with Cheryl Fillekes as the new lead plaintiff. Fillekes is a software engineer who was interviewed by Google four times when she was 47 but was never hired.
