Trump signs executive order easing agricultural biotechnology review process

US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on Tuesday aiming to simplify the review process of agricultural biotechnology.

The Executive Order on Modernizing the Regulatory Framework for Agricultural Biotechnology Products stresses the importance of maintaining public confidence in agricultural biotechnology while also promoting innovation and growth.

To that end, the Executive Order aims to streamline the agricultural biotechnology review process by calling upon the Secretary of Agriculture, the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Commissioner of Food and Drugs to examine regulatory changes.

[W]ithin 180 days of the date of this order, [the Secretary, Administrator, and Commissioner shall] identify relevant regulations and guidance documents within their respective jurisdictions that can be streamlined to ensure that products of agricultural biotechnology are regulated in accordance with the policy set forth in section 3 of this order and take the steps appropriate and necessary to accomplish such streamlining.

The Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of State both released statements praising the Executive Order.
