An Iowa judge on Wednesday granted a temporary injunction blocking the enforcement of a law (Sections 99 and 100) that would cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood applied for the injunction on the basis of irreparable harm, as well as deprivation of constitutional rights.
The court granted the injunction after applying rational review, on the basis of equal protection and finding that Planned Parenthood is likely to succeed on the merits for this claim. Due to this finding, the court did not address the constitutional claims in reference to the request for an injunction.
The court also found in weighing the harms to the parties that the state would face no harm from the injunction being granted, whereas Planned Parenthood would face a serious loss of funding that would require cuts to the programs they offer if the injunction were not granted.
