ACLU and Planned Parenthood file suit against Ohio heartbeat abortion ban

Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit Wedesnday against the state of Ohio challenging the passage of the heartbeat abortion bill.

The bill makes abortion illegal in the state of Ohio if there is a detectable heartbeat. A detectable heartbeat can occur as early as five or six weeks into pregnancy, before many women normally know they are pregnant. The Ohio law makes no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. A portion of Senate Bill 23 also requires the physician to give the pregnant woman the option of hearing the heartbeat: “The person who performs the examination for the presence of a fetal heartbeat shall give the pregnant woman the option to view or hear the fetal heartbeat.”

The ACLU has stated that the bill is unconstitutional. The lawsuit asks for a a permanent ban on the law taking effect in Ohio. The Human Rights and Heartbeat Protection Act is currently set to take effect on July, 11.
