US Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) announced a bill Monday that would establish a commission to study reparations for the institution of slavery and its economic, systemic and economic effects against descendants of American slaves.
“I am proud to introduce legislation that will finally address many of our country’s policies—rooted in a history of slavery and white supremacy—that continue to erode Black communities, perpetuate racism and implicit bias, and widen the racial wealth gap,” Booker said in a tweet.
The bill will be a companion version of the House’s HR 40, introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) in January.
Reparations legislation is growing in popularity in 2020 Democratic candidate circles, particularly as a crowded field of candidates seek African American voters.
