UN rights expert denounces excessive use of force against Palestinian protesters

A UN human rights expert called Tuesday for the international community to hold Israel accountable for what it considers to be violations of international law in Gaza.

Special Rapporteur Michael Lynk summarized the findings of a UN Commission of Inquiry investigation into the 2018 Palestinian protests. The Commission investigated 189 fatalities resulting from the protests and determined that in all but two cases, Israeli security forces’ use of live ammunition to quell the protests violated international law. Lynk stated that Israel’s use of force against protesters, which he notes continues into 2019, clearly violates the Fourth Geneva Convention and may rise to the level of a war crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Lynk called on the international community to hold those who have permitted and participated in the lethal fire to be held accountable:

We must ensure legal accountability and end impunity for the excessive use of force against largely peaceful Palestinian demonstrators, and the resulting arbitrary deprivation of life…This is a grave violation of their right to life and it abrogates their guaranteed freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly and association.

Lynk echoed the Commission’s recommendations that the authorities in Gaza must do more to curtail the use of incendiary kites and balloons, which cause economic damage and incite fear among Israeli civilians.
