The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday agreed to release former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from detention for eight weeks to seek proper medical treatment.

The court granted his request, saying the medical records and Sharif’s health history show he is in need of greater medical treatment. The Additional Prosecutor-General opposed the request, saying Sharif is a convicted prisoner and already being offered and afforded the best medical treatment in the country.

In support of the decision, the court offered as evidence Sharif’s history of medical ailments, including cardiac complications, kidney problem, hypertension and diabetes. According to the medical reports, Sharif will likely require a coronary angiography and cardiac catheterization. Additional health complications put him at higher risk than usual during the surgical procedures.

Sharif was convicted under the Pakistan’s National Accountability Ordinance. He challenged his conviction and seven-year sentence in front of the Islamabad High Court, which has yet to rule on his appeal. In exchange for the eight-week release, Sharif must pay bond of 5,000,000 Rupees and voluntarily surrender himself to authorities at the end of the release period.
