Federal appeals court dissolves injunction against transgender troop ban

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit granted a request from the Trump administration Tuesday to dissolve the injunction preventing the implementation of the memorandum preventing most transgender individuals from serving in the military.

Transgender individuals will only be allowed to serve if they present as their biological sex during service and have not been diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The plan is to officially take effect on April 12.

Previously, a US district court had ruled that the ban could not be implemented.

Shannon Minter, the legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and counsel for the plaintiff, tweeted in response: “The courts have failed to do their job, to the detriment of the military & the country, and allowed a blatantly unconstitutional policy to take effect. We will keep fighting, and the courts may yet do the right thing, but this is a shameful day.”
