EU declares no recognition of Israel sovereignty over Golan Heights

Twenty-eight EU member states on Wednesday issued declaration reaffirming that they do not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights.

The declaration responds to the US President Donald Trump’s proclamation signed on Monday. The proclamation recognizes Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan, which the rest of the international community regards as occupied territory.

“The position of the European Union as regards the status of the Golan Heights has not change,” said by EU member states in a short statement. In accordance with the international law and UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 497, the EU has rejected US recognition of Israels 1981 annexation of the Golan Heights from Syria.

“Annexation of territory by force is prohibited under international law. Any declaration of a unilateral border change goes against the foundation of the rules-based international order and the UN Charter,” said EU members of the Security Council in a statement against the move. “We raise our strong concerns about the broader consequences of recognizing illegal annexation and also about the broader regional consequences.”
