Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed new state legislation Friday that extends firearm background checks and closes a loophole that allowed gun buyers to go through unlicensed sellers to avoid them.
Bill Sponsor and Senate Majority Leader Kelvin Atkinson said Friday, “Background checks are proven to be the best way to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands without compromising the rights of law-abiding citizens.”
Endorsement from Sisolak, a Democrat who took office this year, and the state legislature, underscores a push for stricter gun control while Nevada Democrats enjoy a supermajority in the state Assembly and a majority in the Senate.
Members of the legislature say they are working on a larger bill that aims to further prevent gun violence and include a ban on bump stocks. Bump stocks were used in the 2017 Las Vegas shooting that killed 58 country music concertgoers.
