Afghanistan civilian casualties up 11% in past year: UN report

More civilians were killed in Afghanistan in 2018 than in any other year on record, according to a report published Sunday by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

UNAMA reported 3,804 deaths—an 11 percent increase from 2017. According to the report, the greatest cause of civilian casualties is suicide bombers, coupled with additional attacks by insurgents.

UNAMA reported that there has been a deliberate targeting of civilians in 2018. The attacks on civilians by the Taliban nearly doubled in the past year, while attacks by the Islamic State increased by 118 percent.

Among the two pages of recommendations offered by UNAMA are recommendations to stop the use of IEDs, to ensure that all directives and orders comply with international humanitarian law, and to stop targeting health care facilities and health care workers.

Nuremberg race laws went into effect in Nazi Germany

On September 15, 1935, the Nuremberg Laws of Nazi Germany became effective, racially defining German citizenship and making Jews outcasts. The Reich Health Office issued the following chart in 1936 to assist in ascertaining the "admissibility of marriage between Aryans and non-Aryans." KKK bombs Alabama Church

On September 15, 1963, members of the Klu Klux Klan bombed a predominantly African-American church in Birmingham, Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement. The blast at the 16th Street Baptist Church killed four young girls and injured twenty other people. Despite an investigation by the FBI, no one was charged with responsibility for the crime until Robert Chambliss was convicted of murder in 1977. His accomplices, Thomas Blaton, Jr. and Bobby Frank Cherry, were not tried and convicted until about twenty-five years later.
