Acting US Attorney General Matthew Whitaker testified on Friday before the House Judiciary Committee concerning his involvement in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential campaign. Whitaker said he had not spoken with President Donald Trump about the matter in his tenure as acting Attorney General.
“There has been no change in the overall management of the special counsel investigation. I have and will continue to manage this investigation in a manner that is consistent with the governing regulations,” Whitaker said in his prepared remarks.
“We have followed the special counsel’s regulations to a ‘T.’ There has been no event, no decision, that has required me to take any action, and I have not interfered in any way with the special counsel’s investigation,” Whitaker said.
Judiciary Committee Democrats urged Whitaker to remain out of the investigation for his few remaining days as acting AG.
Whitaker took over in November after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned. Attorney General nominee William Pelham Barr was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday in a 12-10 vote. Now that the Committee has voted in favor of the nomination, a simple majority of the full Senate is required to confirm Barr’s nomination.
