Federal appeals court upholds jury verdict in Apple patent violation case

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Tuesday denied Apple’s appeal of a patent infringement case involving VirnetX.

The ruling upholds a $302.4 million jury verdict, which has since ballooned to $439.8 million after adding interest, costs and additional damages. The court entered the judgment pursuant to Federal Circuit Rule 36, which allows for judgments to be entered without opinions under certain conditions.

VirnetX is an internet security company specializing in protected communications such as VoIP and instant messaging. Attorneys for VirnetX alleged that Apple infringed on four patents owned by VirnetX by using the intellectual property to develop their VPN On Demand, iMessage, and FaceTime features.

This case is one of many patent infringement cases against Apple.
