The EU, along with the US and the UK called Tuesday for an investigation on into the Bangladesh elections that occurred on December 30.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected to a third consecutive term, and her allies obtained greater than 90 percent of the seats in parliament.
Opponents of Hasina believe that the elections were fixed and claim voter intimidation occurred. In a statement the US State Department “note[s] with concern credible reports of harassment, intimidation, and violence in the pre-election period,” and “request[s] the Election Commission work constructively with all sides to address claims of irregularities.”
The EU also commented that “the relevant national authorities should now ensure a proper examination of all allegations of irregularities and commit to full transparency in their resolution.”
The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific, Mark Field, similarly commented, urging” a full, credible and transparent resolution of all complaints related to the conduct of the elections.”
