US Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions Thursday claiming that lawyer Michael Avenatti and accuser Julie Swetnick deliberately obstructed the committee’s investigation into the claims made against Brett Kavanaugh, who was confirmed to the Supreme Court earlier this month.
“When charlatans make false claims to the Committee—claims that may earn them short-term media exposure and financial gain, but which hinder the Committee’s ability to do its job—there should be consequences,” Grassley wrote.
Avenatti is best-known for defending Stormy Daniels, an actress who accused President Donald Trump of an extramarital affair. He is an outspoken critic of Kavanaugh and a prospective presidential candidate in 2020.
The letter accuses Swetnick and Avenatti of fabricating and embellishing their stories and questions their credibility. These alleged actions violate 18 USC §§ 371, 1001, and 1505, which criminalizes the obstruction of Judiciary Committee proceedings.
In a tweet, Avenatti said “we welcome the investigation as now we can finally get to the bottom of Judge Kavanaugh’s lies and conduct.”
